A United Boeing 737-900, registration N69818 performing flight UA-1721 from San Francisco,CA to Kona,HI (USA) with 183 people on board, was climbing out of San Francisco cleared to climb to FL300 when the crew requested to stop climb at 11,000 feet due to a minor problem but continue along the general heading towards Kona. About 10 minutes later the crew advised they had solved their problem and requested to continue climb and was cleared again to FL300. Climbing through 15,000 feet the crew advised the problem had re-occurred and they needed to return to San Francisco but also needed to burn off fuel prior to the return. The aircraft entered a hold at 10,000 feet. While working the checklists the crew declared emergency reporting a leading edge slat problem and requested runway 28L. ATC queried whether they could accept runway 28R, which the crew agreed to. The aircraft departed the hold about 50 minutes after departure, advised they could not go faster than 190 KIAS and landed safely on San Francisco's runway 28R about 70 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N69835 reached Kona with a delay of 3:45 hours.
