An Alitalia Boeing 777-200, registration EI-FNI performing flight AZ-608 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was climbing out of Rome when the crew stopped the climb at FL150 reporting a right hand side hydraulic leak. The aircraft dumped fuel and returned to Rome for a safe landing on runway 16R about one hour after departure. The aircraft vacated the runway via high speed turn off A6 and stopped past the hold short line.

A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration EI-DBM is estimated to reach New York with a delay of 6 hours.

A ground observer reported the occurrence aircraft received damage to the right main gear during landing.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 11.5 hours after landing back.
