A Skywest Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of Alaska Airlines, registration N181SY performing flight OO-3391/AS-3391 from Sacramento,CA to San Diego,CA (USA) with 55 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing through FL320 about 25nm east of Modesto,CA (USA) when the crew received a cargo smoke indication and decided to divert to Modesto for a safe landing on runway 28R about 25 minutes later.

Emergency services reported they found a heat signature but determined that this signature was result of normal operations, the fire suppression system had been discharged, the smoke detector is believed to have been faulty.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled.

The FAA reported the aircraft was diverted due to a cargo smoke indication.

The airline reported the passengers were bussed back to Sacramento and rebooked onto other flights.
