An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N384AA performing flight AA-991 from Miami,FL (USA) to Belo Horizonte,MG (Brazil), was on final approach to Belo Horizonte's runway 16 when the crew initiated a go around due to an unsafe gear indication. The aircraft entered a hold while the crew worked the related checklists. The crew subsequently declared emergency and decided to perform a low approach to runway 16 to have te landing gear inspected from the ground. Following the low approach the aircraft positioned for another approach to runway 16 and landed safely about 30 minutes after the first go around and 15 minutes after the low approach.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 13 hours, then departed for the return flight AA-992 on schedule.
