A United Boeing 737-900, registration N34455 performing flight UA-164 from Tampa,FL to Houston Intercontinental,TX (USA) with 133 people on board, departed Tampa's runway 19R when upon being handed off to departure the crew reported they had hit some ducks on departure and requested to return to Tampa, both engines were running, they just had heard a hard hit at about the center and didn't know what damage had occurred. The aircraft levelled off at 1600 feet and returned to Tampa for a safe landing on runway 19R about 12 minutes after departure.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 3:40 hours, then departed again, but did not climb above FL260, descended to FL240 and continued to Houston at FL240 for a safe landing about 2 hours after departure.
