An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N386AA performing flight AA-946 (scheduled dep Aug 16th, actual dep Aug 17th) from Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil) to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA), was climbing out of Sao Paulo maintaining less than 220 knots above ground and levelled off at FL080, the crew reported a hydraulic failure. The aircraft entered a holding, speed above ground still around 200-220 knots (below minimum clean speed), and returned to Guarulhos Airport for a safe landing on runway 09R about one hour after departure.

A passenger reported that while viewing the flaps of the right hand wing he could not see any movement of the flaps at all from just before takeoff to after landing. There were no distinct clunk sounds similiar to the gear retracting or extending, too, however, the background noise was substantially higher than normal and the aircraft experienced some vibrations that the passenger attributed to the gear remaining extended. The ailerons appeared to operate normally. The aircraft appeared a bit "squirrely" which the passenger thought was caused by the fast and heavy landing. The passenger could not notice any leaking fluids due to darkness.
