Garuda B738 at Yogyakarta on Feb 1st 2017, runway excursion on landing

A Garuda Boeing 737-800, registration PK-GNK performing flight GA-258 from Jakarta to Yogyakarta (Indonesia) with 119 passengers and 7 crew, landed on Yogyakarta's runway 09 at 19:47L (12:47Z) but veered left off the runway and came to a stop with all gear on soft ground. The passengers disembarked onto soft ground via stairs. There were no injuries, the aircraft damage is being assessed.

The airport reported flight GA-258, Tail PK-GNK, overran the end of the runway 09 while landing in heavy rain, there were no injuries. The occupants have been evacuated from the aircraft. There were 119 passengers plus 4 lap children and 5 crew on board.

The aerodrome was closed for about 20 hours as result of the occurrence.

On May 9th 2017 Indonesia's NTSC, also known as KNKT, released their preliminary report reporting the captain (28, ATPL, 6,182 hours total, 4,482 hours on type) was pilot flying, the first officer (23, CPL, 2,217 hours total, 248 hours on type) was pilot monitoring. The crew performed an ILS approach to runway 09, touched down slightly to the right of the center line. When approaching taxiway N2 with reverse thrust applied the aircraft began to veer left and came to a stop on the left shoulder of the runway about 1600 meters/5250 feet down the runway and 20 meters/65 feet from the left runway egde.

Tower activated the crash bell and informed emergency services that an aircraft had veered off the runway 09 and stopped near taxiway N2.

Crew inquired with tower whether there was any fire, the crew of another aircraft being pushed back at the time as well as tower advised that there was no fire.

The NTSC reported: "Passenger evacuation completed at approximately 50 minutes after the aircraft stopped." There were no injuries.

The NTSC found that there had been light rain and the runway was wet. Prior to touch down and landing roll the flight data recorder showed variation of wind speeds and directions, after touchdown the activation of the thrust reversers, asymmetric brakes pressures and rudder deflection.

The ILS runway 09 was functioning properly.

The last runway friction check had been conducted on Feb 3rd 2016 and the last rubber deposit cleaning was done on Oct 5th to 7th 2016. According to circular advisories the friction check should be performed monthly and the rubber deposit cleaning every 4 months.

The NTSC reported weather reports were provided by Indonesia's Air Force and read at 12:30Z: winds from 200 degrees at 4 knots, visibility 1000 meters (runway 27)/2000 meters (runway 09), medium rain, broken cloud 1400 feet, temperature 24 degrees C, dew point 24 degrees C, QNH 1010 hPa, at 12:51Z: winds from 250 degrees at 5-8 knots, visibility 1000 meters (runway 27)/2000 meters (runway 09), light rain, broken cloud 1400 feet, temperature 24 degrees C, dew point 24 degrees C, QNH 1010 hPa and at 13:00Z: winds from 270 degrees at 6 knots, visibility 1000 meters (runway 27)/1000 meters (runway 09), medium rain, broken cloud 1400 feet, temperature 25 degrees C, dew point 25 degrees C, QNH 1010 hPa.
