A British Airways Boeing 767-300, registration G-BZHB performing flight BA-461 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL320 about 100nm westsouthwest of Bordeaux (France) when the crew descended the aircraft to FL260 and subsequently decided to divert to Bordeaux for a safe landing on runway 23 about 55 minutes after leaving FL320.

A passenger reported the captain announced the right hand engine's (RB211) de-icing system had overheated and they were now diverting to Bordeaux. There was a BA flight about to depart from Bordeaux to London Gatwick, the flight was held to accomodate diverted passengers. However, instead of bussing the diverted passengers over to the new aircraft they needed to go through immigration and check in, which delayed the passengers so much, that the flight could not be held any longer and departed without them. The passengers were subsequently taken to hotels and reached London the following day with a delay of 18 hours. The passenger annotated that the Boeing 767-300 was pretty full, the following day a relief A320 was dispatched.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration G-EUYY was dispatched to Bordeaux the following day and reached London Heathrow as flight BA-461D with a delay of 18 hours.
