An Aeroflot Airbus A321-200, registration VP-BES performing flight SU-1008 from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Kaliningrad (Russia) with 171 passengers and 7 crew, landed on Kaliningrad's runway 24 at about 22:55L (20:55Z) but veered right off the runway and came to a stop just short of taxiway C with the nose gear collapsed. The aircraft was evacuated via slides.

The airport was closed for about 30 hours as result of the occurrence.

The airline reported the aircraft landed in strong crosswind and poor braking action causing the runway overrun, which resulted in the nose gear collapse.

A passenger reported the aircraft touched down normally shortly followed by a first jolt, the aircraft began shaking, a second sharp jolt followed and the aircraft settled on its nose, smoke appeared in the cabin. After a few minutes the flight attendants opened the emergency exits, then the passengers were waiting on the ground for possibly 10-15 minutes until emergency services arrived.

Kaliningrad's Ministry of Emergency Situations (MCHS) reported the aircraft overran the runway. There were no injuries and no leakages.

Video evidence received on Jan 5th 2017 shows the aircraft did not run beyond the end of the runway, but veered right off the runway and came to a stop just short of taxiway C (in direction of runway 24 first taxiway towards the apron).

Aeroflot reported in an internal memo becoming known on Jan 7th 2017, that the aircraft landed on runway 24 with low friction coefficients at maximum permissable cross wind component. While running over the safety strip at the side of the runway the nose gear collapsed before the aircraft came to a stop. The crew initiated an evacuation. The airline reminded their flight crew to strictly touch down without drift in the landing zone, smoothly reduce reverse thrust in case of drifting after engaging the thrust reversers and in reduced visibility and rain carefully decide about the use and mode of landing lights.

Russia's Rosaviatsia (Civil Aviation Authority) reported the aircraft veered right off the runway during roll out, all landing gear went over and sank into soft ground resulting in the collapse of the nose gear. The occurrence was rated a serious incident and is being investigated by Russia's CAA.

In their January bulletin released on Feb 3rd 2017 Rosaviatsia reported that the aircraft veered right off the runway and came to a stop 17 meters off the paved surface of the runway about 300 meters after exiting the runway. The aircraft received substantial damage to nose gear, fuselage sections 13/4 and 11/12, engines and engine nacelles, engine pylons, slats and flaps, anti-ice system sensor and brakes hoses. The investigation is continuing.
