A LOT Polish Airlines Boeing 787-800, registration SP-LRC performing flight LO-7 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Warsaw (Poland), was enroute at FL370 over the Atlantic Ocean about to enter Ocean Crossing, when the aircraft began a climb to FL380 without clearance and without pilot intervention. At FL375 the crew initiated a descent back to FL370, at the same time Gander Center queried the crew. The aircraft levelled off again at FL370 and continued to Warsaw for a safe landing.

Poland's PKBWL reported that at the time of the uncommanded climb the flight mode announciators indicated LNAV and VNAV PTH rather than LNAV and ALT. The MCP also showed LNAV and VNAV activated. Unaware of the altitude contraint imposed by ATC and being programmed to FL380 prior to departure the FMC thus initiated a shallow climb at about 100-200fpm. The PKBWL stated that insufficient supervision of the programming of the FMC prior to departure by just one pilot as well as insufficient supervision of flight parameters in flight caused the occurrence. The PKBWL reported the airline took a number of safety actions as result of the occurrence.
