A Skywest Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of United, registration N161SY performing flight OO-5588 (callsign SKW494J) from Houston Intercontinental,TX (USA) to Monterrey (Mexico) with 51 passengers and 4 crew, was on final approach to Monterrey's runway 29 when the crew aborted the approach due to an unsafe gear indication. The aircraft diverted to San Antonio,TX (USA), performed a low approach to runway 04 to have the gear inspected from the ground, the nose gear appeared to be in position. The aircraft entered a hold, the crew managed to get a locked indication for the nose gear and advised they would taxi off the runway if they were able to. The aircraft landed on San Antonio's runway 04 about 85 minutes after go-around in Monterrey and 30 minutes after the low approach but suffered the collapse of the nose gear during the roll out and was disabled on the runway. The aircraft was evacuated through the aft exits via slides. One passenger received a minor ankle injury.

The aircraft had diverted to Houston's Intercontinental Airport the previous day while on flight UA-5588 from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to Monterrey (Mexico).

In Dec 2016 the NTSB released preliminary information stating, that the crew heard a loud pop just aft of the flight deck after departure from Houston. As there were no abnormal indications the crew continued the flight to Monterrey but received a gear disagree indication when the landing gear was extended. The crew retracted the landing gear and decided to divert to San Antonio. The crew declared emergency, performed a fly by to verify the landing gear position via tower. Tower reported the gear appeared to be in the down position. After landing on runway 04, during roll out, the nose gear collapsed. During recovery of the aircraft a failed downlock spring was found that impeded the downlock function of the nose gear. The spring was sent for further analysis.

On Jan 10th 2020 the NTSB released their final report concluding the probable cause of the occurrence was:

A failure of the nose landing gear down lock spring which precluded normal downlock operation of the nose landing gear. The spring failure was due to the presence of too much retained austenite which led to the formation of progressive cracking and subsequent failure of the spring.
