A Fedex Federal Express Boeing 777-200, registration N880FD performing flight FX-3 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Munich (Germany), was enroute at FL330 entering Swiss Airspace at 16:06L (14:06Z) north of Zurich (Switzerland). At that time Swiss Fighter Aircraft had already been dispatched at supersonic speed (causing sonic booms on the ground) to intercept the aircraft and reached the Boeing 777 shortly after crossing the border. At 16:11L (14:11Z) the crew reported on Swiss Radar: "On Guard, Fedex 3 is ... regards, Gentlemen", Swiss Radar instantly handed the aircraft, now almost over Lake Constanz, to Munich Radar for the approach to Munich. The aircraft landed safely in Munich about 20 minutes later.

Switzerland's Luftwaffe reported, shortly after 16:00L there had been a "hot mission" due to an airliner enroute from Zurich towards Lake Constanz, who had lost communication with air traffic control. As soon as the military aircraft came in view of the airline pilots, they switched to the international guard frequency and communication was subsequently restored, the mission was such completed.

Residents around the regions reported hearing two booms, initially not associated with supersonic aircraft, residents in Sankt Gallen (Switzerland), near the position of the rendevouz, reported the booms just before 16:10L.
