A United Boeing 767-300, registration N654UA performing flight UA-956 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Geneva (Switzerland) with 157 passengers and 11 crew, was enroute at FL350 about 45nm east of Halifax,NS (Canada) when crew discovered a suspicious item, a camera, on an empty seat, the camera was not claimed by anybody on board. The flight crew decided to turn around and divert to Boston,MA (USA) for a safe landing about 70 minutes later. The passengers disembarked.

A search of the aircraft found no trace of explosives, an examination of the camera found it safe, too.

The remainder of the flight and the return flight UA-975 to Washington Dulles,DC (USA) were cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

On Aug 10th the Canadian TSB reported the unattended camera was actually found in a sick bag, no one claimed ownership.
