Kalitta B744 at Leipzig on May 7th 2016, dropped gear door on final approach

A Kalitta Air Boeing 747-400 freighter, registration N741CK performing freight flight K4-248 from Delhi (India) to Leipzig (Germany), was on final approach to Leipzig's runway 08R maintaining 2000 feet MSL when the aircraft entered a 360 to the right about 4.3nm before the runway threshold. The aircraft completed the circle and landed safely on runway 08R about 5 minutes later.

Observers near Lake Rassnitz (Raßnitzer See), about 4.5nm southwest of the runway threshold, reported a part separated from the aircraft and landed in the lake.

Leipzig's Police reported that following reports from the residents they called Leipzig Airport and received confirmation that an aircraft had just landed, a part was missing from that aircraft. A helicopter was dispatched and found the part in the water, depth about 2 meters, of the lake about 7 meters/23 feet from the shore of the lake, the gear door of the left main landing gear was recovered from the lake, the part weighed about 20kg/44lbs and was sized 2 meters/6.6 feet by 1 meter/3.3 feet. Nobody was injured.

Germany's BFU have opened an investigation into the occurrence.

The occurrence aircraft positioned to Amsterdam (Netherlands) on May 11th and resumed service from Amsterdam.
