An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-400, registration N797AS performing flight AS-69 from Seattle,WA to Ketchikan,AK (USA) with 150 people on board, was climbing out of Seattle's runway 16L when a lightning struck the aircraft prompting the crew to stop the climb at 7000 feet and return to Seattle. The aircraft landed safely on Seattle's runway 16L about 16 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported there was a bright large discharge at the top of a wing.

A replacement Boeing 737-400 registration N792AS reached Ketchikan with a delay of 110 minutes.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground 19 hours after landing.
