An Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration A6-EMI performing flight EK-522 (dep Feb 13th) from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Thiruvananthapuram (India) with 170 people on board, was enroute at FL390 over the Arabian Sea about 470nm southsoutheast of Karachi (Pakistan) when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (Trent 892) down, drifted down to FL250 and diverted to Karachi for a safe landing on runway 25L about 90 minutes later.

A listener on frequency reported the crew initiated an Oceanic contingency procedure declaring PAN due to a left engine failure, turning right off the airway and descended initially to FL280.

A replacement Boeing 777-300 registration A6-EMM was dispatched to Karachi, continued the flight and reached India with a delay of about 10 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Karachi about 24 hours after landing.
