A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N782SA performing flight WN-3358 from Houston Hobby,TX to Santa Ana,CA (USA) with 131 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 90nm westnorthwest of El Paso,TX (USA) when the crew donned their oxygen masks reporting smoke in the cockpit, turned the aircraft around and diverted to El Paso. On approach the crew, still on oxygen masks, advised they were planning to vacate the runway, taxi to the gate and deplane the passengers at the gate. The aircraft landed safely on runway 22 about 25 minutes after leaving FL380 and taxied to the apron.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 4 hours, then was able to continue the journey and reached Santa Ana with a delay of 5 hours.
