A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N7709A performing flight WN-2547 from Oakland,CA to Chicago Midway,IL (USA), was climbing out of Oakland's runway 30 when upon contacting departure the crew reported they had an issue with the aircraft and needed to declare emergency and return to Oakland. The crew advised it was a landing gear issue, they didn't yet know exactly what it was. The aircraft levelled off at 3000 feet and entered a hold, later climbed to 12,000 feet. The aircraft left the hold about 3.5 hours after departure, commenced a low approach to Oakland's runway 30 to have the landing gear inspected from the ground, then positioned for another approach and landed safely on runway 30 about 15 minutes after the low approach and 4 hours after departure.

The FAA reported the aircraft burned off fuel, air traffic control saw the landing gear in position during the low approach and the aircraft landed safely.

The airline reported the aircraft returned to check a maintenance item.

Passengers reported they were instructed to assume their brace positions for landing.
