A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N438WN performing flight WN-541 from Denver,CO to Seattle,WA (USA) with 151 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 230nm northwest of Denver when the crew reported flight attendants and passengers noticed the smell of burning rubber in the cabin. The crew decided to return to Denver, advised while descending towards Denver that the odour had dissipated, and landed safely on runway 34R about 30 minutes after turning around. The aircraft taxied to the apron. Firefighters entered the aircraft at the gate and examined the cabin finding everything normal with no trace of fire, heat or smoke.

A replacement Boeing 737-700 registration N441WN reached Seattle with a delay of 3:45 hours.

The occurrence aircraft resumed service after about 14 hours on the ground.
