An American Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N678AW performing flight AA-550/US-550 (dep Oct 4th) from Phoenix,AZ to Boston,MA (USA) with 147 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute at FL350 about 30nm south of Syracuse,NY (USA) when the captain became ill and was no longer able to perform his duties. The first officer took over and decided to divert to Syracuse advising they were a medical emergency with the captain incapacitated while descending through 15,000 feet. The aircraft landed on Syracuse's runway 28 about 25 minutes later, the first officer inquired how emergency services would get the captain quickly, emergency services advised the aircraft would be needed at a gate for quick access. The aircraft vacated the runway and taxied to a gate where paramedics entered the cockpit.

The airline reported incredibly saddened that the captain (57) died.

A replacement crew continued the flight and delivered the passengers to Boston with a delay of 4:45 hours.
