A KLM Boeing 747-400, registration PH-BFU performing flight KL-661 (callsign KLM 23) from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Houston,TX (USA), was enroute at FL310 about 170nm northnorthwest of Shannon (Ireland) when the crew reported they would not like to continue the Atlantic crossing and remain in vicinity of the coast. The aircraft was cleared onto a southerly heading maintaining FL310. About 5 minutes later the crew advised they would like to divert to Shannon to localize some explosion type noises from the cargo hold and dump fuel on the way, the aircraft was subsequently cleared towards Shannon and to dump fuel. The aircraft descended to FL230 and followed delay vectors while dumping fuel and landed safely on Shannon's runway 06 about 77 minutes after aborting the oceanic crossing. The aircraft taxied to gate 42. While taxiing the crew reported they had problems with two pallets of cargo on the main deck and required emergency services to not open any cargo doors until everybody had disembarked, they did not expect anything to happen but they wouldn't know, they needed to disembark the passengers but would like them to be kept in the gate area without the need to have them security checked again for continuation of the flight. The pallets would need to be unloaded and checked.

The aircraft was able to depart again after 3 hours on the ground and is currently estimated to reach Houston with a delay of about 4 hours.

The cause of the noises was not reported.
