An American Airlines Airbus A330-200, registration N279AY performing flight US-705/AA-705 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Charlotte,NC (USA) with 194 passengers, was enroute at FL350 about 40nm northwest of Manchester,EN (UK) when the crew decided to abort the flight due to fresh water leaking from a lavatory and flooding the cabin. The aircraft entered a hold to burn off fuel and diverted to London Heathrow,EN (UK) for a safe landing on runway 27L about 2.5 hours after leaving FL350.

A passenger reported fresh water leaked from lavatory L38 (located at the left hand side of the cabin just forward of the L3 door, between seat rows 21 and 23) and flooded the cabin. The captain announced, that he decided to not enter Oceanic Airspace with this problem, they were burning off fuel to get below maximum landing weight. The aircraft entered a hold for about 2 hours with speed brakes extended, the aircraft subsequently diverted to London Heathrow. After landing a technician boarded the aircraft, according to announcements closed a shut off valve, the water was removed from the cabin using an industrial cleaner and the aircraft was released to continue the flight.

The airline confirmed the aircraft was burning off fuel and diverted to London Heathrow due to a water leak.

The occurrence aircraft departed London Heathrow after about 3:15 hours on the ground and is now enroute to Philadelphia,PA (USA) for an intermediate stop due to crew duty time limitations before continuing on to Charlotte, where the aircraft is now estimated to arrive with a delay of 9.5 hours.
