A Germanwings Airbus A319-100, registration D-AKNK performing flight 4U-8916 from Berlin Tegel (Germany) to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (Turkey) with 124 people on board, was enroute at FL310 about 90nm east of Sofia when the crew decided to divert to Sofia advising this would be a normal landing with no assitance needed. The aircraft landed safely on Sofia's runway 27 about 25 minutes later and taxied to the apron.

The aircraft continued after about one hour on the ground and reached Istanbul with a delay of 2 hours.

Sofia Airport reported that the aircraft diverted to Sofia because a bird strike at takeoff from Tegel Airport was being suspected. A check of the engines of the aircraft however did not reveal any evidence of a bird strike, the aircraft continued to Istanbul.

The occurrence aircraft continued to follow its schedule throughout the day.
