An Air Berlin Airbus A330-200, registration D-ABXC performing flight AB-7534 from Hamburg (Germany) to Palma Mallorca,SP (Spain), had been instructed: "Line up runway 33 and wait", which was properly acknowledged. The aircraft taxied into position and stopped.

An Air Berlin Boeing 737-800, registration D-ABKT performing flight AB-6308 from Munich to Hamburg (Germany), was on short final to Hamburg's runway 23, when the crew observed the Airbus 330-200 begin their takeoff run on the crossing runway 33 and initiated a go-around from about 300 feet AGL.

At about the same time tower observed the Airbus A330-200 commencing the takeoff run without clearance and instructed the crew to stop. The crew rejected their takeoff run at low speed (about 20 knots) and stopped the aircraft short of the intersection runways 23 and 33. In a subsequent exchange the crew queried about their takeoff clearance, tower explained they had not been cleared for takeoff.

The Boeing 737-800 positioned for another approach to runway 23 and landed safely about 15 minutes later.

The Airbus A330-200 taxied back to the holding point runway 33, received takeoff clearance about 10 minutes later and reached Palma Mallorca almost on time.

Germany's BFU confirmed they were informed about the occurrence on May 22nd 2015 but decided to not open an investigation into this occurrence rated a "runway incursion", the occurrence has not been rated a serious incident or accident.

Ground observer Jan A. Richter reported he was in a Cafe at the GAT, about 300 meters from the scene, when he heard the sound of engines accelerating for takeoff and then stopping abruptly. When looking out he noticed the Boeing 737-800 had already initiated the go around, he estimated the takeoff was rejected after about 200 meters of distance, the A330 came to stop well clear of the intersection, the aircraft was able to vacate the runway via the taxiway before the intersection.
