A Skywest Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of United, registration N932SW performing flight OO-5316/UA-5316 from Monterey,CA to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 40 passengers and 3 crew, was on final approach to Los Angeles' runway 24R when the crew received indication the left main gear did not lock down. The crew aborted the approach, worked the related checklists then positioned for a low approach to runway 24L. Tower asked the crew of an aircraft waiting for departure to also look up and check the landing gear of the aircraft on a fly by. The aircraft joined the final approach course slightly offset to the left of the center line to get closer to the tower for the inspection from the ground which confirmed the left main gear had not extended, the aircraft subsequently positioned for a left main gear up landing on runway 24L about 30 minutes after aborting the first approach. The crew managed touchdown on right main gear and nose gear, held the left main gear up as long as practicable then put the left wing down and managed to steer the aircraft along the runway center line until full stop. There were no injuries, the passengers evacuated onto the runway and were bussed to the terminal, the damage to the aircraft is being assessed.

The NTSB have opened an investigation into the occurrence.
