A British Airways Airbus A320-200, registration G-EUYC performing flight BA-462 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Madrid,SP (Spain), was climbing out of Heathrow's runway 09R when the crew stopped the climb at FL100, shut an engine (V2527) down and returned to Heathrow for a safe landing on runway 09L about 45 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration G-EUUF reached Madrid with a delay of 3.5 hours.

A passenger reported an engine emitted a loud bang and streaks of flames during initial climb.
