A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A357 performing flight VN-1266 from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh City (Vietnam) with 135 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute at FL350 about 260nm south of Hanoi (Vietnam) when the crew initiated an emergency descent to 13,000 feet due to the loss of cabin pressure, the passenger oxygen masks were released. The crew activated the transponder code for unlawful interference instead of general emergency during the descent for about 3 minutes, then returned to their assigned transponder code and diverted to Hanoi for a safe landing.

Vietnam's Ministry of Transport and Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority have opened investigations into the occurrence stating, that there was no unlawful interference ongoing during the flight, the diversion to Hanoi was caused by the loss of cabin pressure and release of passenger oxygen masks.
