An Alitalia Boeing 777-200, registration EI-ISB performing flight AZ-8320 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) with 201 people on board, was enroute at FL370 about 50nm southeast of Athens when the crew declared emergency reporting the windshield of the first officer had cracked. The aircraft performed a rapid descent to FL160 and further to 8,000 feet (average rate of descent 2700 fpm) and diverted to Athens for a safe landing on runway 21R about 20 minutes later.

The flight was estimated to continue the following morning after about 14 hours on the ground. The passengers were taken to hotels.

A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration EI-DDH was dispatched to Athens and reached Dubai with a delay of 14:10 hours.

The charter flight took its passengers to a cruise ship departing Dubai and returned another group of passengers from the cruise ship.
