A THY Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration TC-JFV performing flight TK-1618 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (Turkey), was enroute at FL390 about 25nm west of Salzburg (Austria), still in German Airspace about to enter Austrian Airspace, when the crew radioed their request to descend to FL120 advising they had lost control of their cabin pressure. ATC did not understand the call, another Turkish Airlines chimed in and repeated the request, after which TK-1618 was cleared to descend to FL130. In the meantime the crew of TK-1618 had changed their transponder to the code for unlawful interference prompting Austrian Air Defense to launch two Saab 105 fighter aircraft to intercept the Boeing 737-800, the crew of the Boeing subsequently set their transponder to the code of (general) emergency. The fighter aircraft met the Boeing and accompanied the aircraft along their diversion at FL130 to Vienna, where the Boeing 737-800 landed safely on runway 11 about 35 minutes after leaving FL390. One passenger received injuries of unknown severity as result of the loss of cabin pressure and subsequent emergency descent and was taken to a hospital.

Vienna Airport told AustrianWings, that the aircraft had lost cabin pressure, the passenger oxygen masks had been released as well. The aircraft landed safely in Vienna, there were no injuries, one person however received medical assistance due to blood pressure problems.

On Dec 1st 2014 The Aviation Herald learned, that one person received injuries as result of the loss of cabin pressure and subsequent emergency descent prompting the crew to request an ambulance upon arrival at Vienna. As the first officer selected the transponder code for unlawful interference into the transponder for so far unknown reasons, military and police forces were informed about a possible hijack, Austrian Air Force dispatched fighter aircraft to escort the aircraft to landing in Vienna. There was no loss of communication at any time (other than widely claimed in media citing sources in Austria's Bundesheer).
