A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N171DN performing flight DL-63 from Boston,MA (USA) to London Heathrow,EN (UK) with 220 people on board, was climbing through 3000 feet out of runway 33L when the crew reported a "little problem" with the landing gear and requested to level off at 5000 feet to work the procedures. About 10 minutes later the crew reported they were consulting with the maintenance crew and just recycling the landing gear. Another 15 minutes later the crew reported they were still on the radio with maintenance working through the procedures. About 35 minutes after levelling off the crew decided to return to Boston requesting assistance but were not yet sure whether to declare emergency, ATC replied the equipment would be standing by. The crew requested the longest runway, 33L, available. About 50 minutes after departure the crew declared emergency, requested runway 33L and descend to 3000 feet initially to burn off fuel for about 50 minutes. The crew reported they got a landing gear doors disagree indication on takeoff, it appeared the main landing gear doors never closed, but they had now a safe indication for all landing gear, that had been extended already. The aircraft landed safely on runway 33L about 2 hours after departure.
