A Global Airlift Hawker Siddeley HS-748, registration 5Y-BVQ performing a charter cargo flight from Juba to Panyagor (South Sudan) with 3 crew, was on approach to Panyagor when the crew reported problems with the landing gear and initiated a go around. The aircraft subsequently lost height and came to a stop about 20 meters short of the southern threshold of the runway and burst into flames. The two pilots were killed in the accident, a mechanics in the back of the aircraft was taken to a hospital with injuries. Several houses south of the airstrip were destroyed, there are no reports of injuries or fatalities on the ground however (local media report 10 goats were killed in the accident however).

There is no word on the extent of the injuries of the mechanics.

Local Authorities reported the aircraft was carrying non-food humanitarian aid cargo when it came down, the cause of the accident is unclear.

Panyagor Airstrip (neither IATA nor ICAO code assigned) is located about 150nm north of Juba.

According to UNHAS there are four airstrips in the area:

Poktap Airstrip, location N7.4566 E31.4149 13km north of Panyagor, visible on satellite images is a north/south runway of about 3800 feet/1150 meters length (UNHAS: runway 18/36 with 800 meters length and 25 meters width)

Rialbek Airstrip, location N7.3377 E31.4211 800 meters northeast of Panyagor, according to UNHAS featuring runway 17/35 length 650 meters width 35 meters, satellite images showing only forest.

Wiernyor Airstrip, location N7.3263 E31.4237 1100 meters southeast of Panyagor, according to UNHAS featuring runway 15/33 length 800 meters width 21 meters, satellite images inconclusive (most aviation sources identify this location as Panyagor Airport)

Kongor Airstrip, location N7.1683 E31.4117 18km south of Panyagor, visible on satellite images is a runway, approx 03/21, of 1150 meters length, according to UNHAS this is Panyagor/Mabior Airstrip with a runway 03/21 of 1280 meters length and 30 meters width or 1200 meters length and 60 meters width (conflicting entries in the UNHAS document). The airstrip is located right in the middle of Kongor town (Mabior suburb).

The reports of houses destroyed south of the runway threshold identify the Kongor Airstrip, which has also been identified by reader Denis as Panyagor/Mabior Airstrip in the reader comments of this coverage.

5Y-BVQ used to be operated by 748 Air Services but changed hands to Global Airlift in 2014.
