Finnair A333 near Gander on May 18th 2014, engine did not respond to thrust lever

A Finnair Airbus A330-300, registration OH-LTS performing flight AY-5 from Helsinki (Finland) to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 289 passengers, was enroute at FL380 about 30nm southeast of Gander,NL (Canada) when the crew requested and was cleared to climb to FL400. The autothrust system responded properly, however the right hand engine (CF6) slowed to 54.9% and did not respond to any thrust lever movement. The crew descended the aircraft to FL300 because the aircraft was no longer able to maintain FL380 with the reduced thrust. The crew consulted with company maintenance and attempted to reset the engine however without success. Subsequently it was decided to divert to Halifax,NS (Canada). On approach to Halifax the right hand engine was shut down. The aircraft performed a safe single engine landing in Halifax about 70 minutes later.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found the PS3 tube near the transfer gear box fractured. The PS3 sense line was replaced, subsequent engine test runs were satisfactory and the aircraft returned to service.
