A Shuttle America Embrar ERJ-170 on behalf of United, registration N647RW performing flight S5-3503/UA-3503 from Calgary,AB (Canada) to Denver,CO (USA) with 74 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Calgary when the crew attempted to select the gear lever up but could not move the lever. After retrying the gear lever moved into the up position, the left and nose gear retracted, the right main gear showed an abnormal indication and the gear disagree warning activated together with master warning. A short time later a right hand brakes fault warning message activated, too. The crew worked the relevant checklists and decided to return to Calgary. Upon selecting the gear down the right hand gear did not indicate down and locked, the crew performed a low approach for a visual inspection of the gear from the ground, ground subsequently reported the right main gear appeared in the correct position. The crew positioned for an approach to runway 17R, landed safely and stopped on the runway. Emergency services inspected the aircraft and reported the right hand inboard main tyre was shredded. The aircraft was towed to the gate.

NAV Canada reported the runway was closed for about 2 hours as result of the occurrence.

The Canadian TSB reported the crew worked the abnormal landing gear extension without receiving a down and locked indication for the right hand main gear. Responding emergency services informed the crew the right hand inboard main tyre was found shredded after the full stop landing on runway 17R.
