A Niki Airbus A321-200, registration OE-LES performing flight HG-3002 from Salzburg (Austria) to Lanzarote,CI (Spain), was enroute at FL350 about 70nm east of Faro (Portugal) when the crew decided to divert to Faro due to a cracked right hand windshield. The aircraft landed safely on Faro's runway 28 about 20 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration OE-LEE reached Lanzarote with a delay of 8 hours.

Air Berlin, parent company of Niki, phoned Austrianwings that the aircraft made a normal landing in Faro but neither responded to inquiries by The Aviation Herald nor contacted The Aviation Herald at all. At the same time they also told Austrianwings, that the aircraft returning to Vienna made a normal landing without crew on oxygen, see Incident: Niki A320 near Vienna on Jan 31st 2014, loss of cabin pressure.

Air Berlin's press department did not explain however why it was necessary to land in Faro although the flight was planned direct from Salzburg to Lanzarote or why it was necessary to return to Vienna if everything was normal, nor did Air Berlin explain why replacement aircraft needed to be dispatched to complete the flights. Air Berlin's press department also did not explain why a passenger as well as listeners on frequency reported the crew indicated a cracked windshield.
