An Air Astana Boeing 767-300, registration P4-KCA performing flight KC-931 from Almaty (Kazakhstan) to Bangkok (Thailand) with 95 passengers and 10 crew, was enroute at FL360 about 220nm southwest of Almaty (and about 180nm east of Tashkent (Uzbekistan) when the crew received indication of a left hand generator (engine CF6) failure and decided to return to Almaty, where the aircraft landed safely about 80 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration P4-KCB reached Bangkok with a delay of 6:15 hours.

Although the general direction of the route is to the southeast, the aircraft initially fly southwest into Afghanistan and Pakistan before turning eastwards towards Bangkok effectively flying around the Himalaya Massif.
