An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N9677W performing flight AA-1118 from San Jose,CA to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) with 146 people on board, was in the initial climb out of San Jose's runway 30R when the crew declared emergency reporting they had suffered a bird strike and lost the right hand engine (JT8D). The aircraft joined a right hand downwind at about 2000 feet and returned to San Jose's runway 30L for a safe landing about 10 minutes after departure and stopped on the runway stating they had no fire indication for the engine.

The airport reported the bird was ingested at about 900 feet AGL.
