A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N1607B performing flight DL-55 from Lagos (Nigeria) to Atlanta,GA (USA), was enroute near Dakar (Senegal) when a woman on board, pregnant in her 24th week, gave birth to a baby boy prompting the crew to divert to Dakar. The aircraft landed in Dakar about 30 minutes later but burst a number of tyres on landing. Baby and mother were taken to a hospital, the baby could not be saved however.

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration N182DN was dispatched from Atlanta to Dakar as flight DL-9856 and reached Atlanta with a delay of 16.5 hours.
