A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, registration D-AIHR performing flight LH-731 (scheduled dep Aug 14th, actual dep Aug 15th) from Hong Kong (China) to Munich (Germany), departed Hong Kong's runway 25L at about 4:30L (20:30Z Aug 14th) when the crew stopped the climb at FL130 and descended the aircraft to FL110 suspecting the aircraft's tail had contacted the runway during rotation in Typhoon wind conditions. Due to weather conditions in the area the crew subsequently decided to divert to Shanghai's Pudong Airport (China) at FL110, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 16 about 4 hours after departure from Hong Kong.

Following examination the aircraft was able to depart Shanghai after about 16.5 hours on the ground and reached Munich at normal cruise levels with a delay of 26 hours.

At the time of departure Typhoon Utor was battering Hong Kong.
