A United Boeing 757-200, registration N19130 performing flight UA-54 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) with 172 people on board, was enroute at FL350 about 50nm northwest of Bangor,ME (USA) about one hour into the flight when the crew decided to turn back to Newark reporting an equipment issue. The aircraft landed overweight but safely back in Newark about 2 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N19117 reached Paris with a delay of 4.5 hours.

The incident aircraft was able to depart Newark as flight UA-74 to Hamburg (Germany) about 19 hours after landing.

A passenger reported the captain announced an engine problem about one hour into the flight. The captain explained they were currently running on redundancy but he did not want to cross the Atlantic on redundancy and therefore was returning to Newark.

On the previous flight UA-1196 from Orlando,FL (USA) to Newark the aircraft systems had transmitted an engine anti-ice maintenance message, the aircraft departed Newark for flight UA-54 after less than 2 hours on the ground.
