A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIGY performing flight LH-598 from Khartoum (Sudan) to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), was enroute about 35 minutes into the flight when the crew initiated an emergency descent to FL100 with the passengers oxygen masks being released and returned to Khartoum for a safe landing on runway 36 about 80 minutes after departure.

The passengers were taken to hotels in Khartoum overnight.

The following day passengers started to complain to Lufthansa via Facebook and Twitter that they were stranded at Khartoum, left without information and left without options for their onward journey. More than 19 hours after landing passengers were finally told by a Lufthansa reply to the complaint on Facebook they were being rebooked onto Ethiopian Airlines for the leg to Addis Ababa.

The incident aircraft returned to Frankfurt as flight LH-599 on Jul 8th cruising at FL140.
