A Westjet Boeing 737-800, registration C-GZWS performing flight WS-1461 from Las Vegas,NV (USA) to Calgary,AB (Canada) with 158 passengers and 5 crew, had lined up runway 07L at intersection A8. After departure the crew declared emergency just upon being handed off to departure frequency reporting they had lost an engine (CFM56). The crew intended to level off at 5000 feet, ATC queried whether they would be able to climb to 7000 feet and subsequently instructed the aircraft to continue the climb to 7000 feet due to terrain. After following vectors around a peak the aircraft approached runway 07L for a safe landing about 20 minutes after departure.

The next departure from runway 07L, also lining up at intersection A8, also experienced engine trouble requiring a return about 5 minutes after WS-1461, see Incident: Allegiant MD88 at Las Vegas on Jun 29th 2013, engine trouble.

On Jul 9th 2013 the Canadian TSB reported the crew received an overheat indication for the right hand engine while climbing through 300 feet AGL. The crew actioned the engine overheat checklist, but the indication remained prompting the crew to action the engine fire checklist including the shut down of the engine and discharge of the first fire bottle, then the overheat indication ceased. The aircraft performed a safe single engine landing, emergency services checked brakes and gear finding no damage, during taxi to the gate one tyre deflated. Maintenance determined an engine fire detector loop was defective and replaced the loop.
