An Air China Airbus A330-200, registration B-6073 performing flight CA-178 from Melbourne,VI (Australia) to Shanghai (China), was enroute at FL360 near Tindal,NT (Australia) on a northwesterly heading. A Qantas Boeing 737-800, registration VH-VXI performing flight QF-842 from Sydney,NS to Darwin,NT (Australia), was also enroute on a northwesterly heading at FL360 near Tindal,NT, about 160nm southeast of Darwin. Australia's Transportation Safety Board reported both aircraft were on converging tracks at the same flight level resulting in a break down of separation raising also alerts of a conflict with air traffic control. The ATSB rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation. No further details are available at this time. Both aircraft continued to their destinations for safe landings.
