A United Boeing 777-200, registration N782UA performing flight UA-976 from Washington Dulles,DC (USA) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates), was climbing out of Dulles Airport's runway 30 when the crew reported upon contacting departure that they had taken a couple of bird strikes and wanted to stop the climb at 3000 feet. About two minutes later the crew declared emergency and requested to return to Washington and enter a hold first, the aircraft was instructed to climb to 5000 feet to enter the hold. The captain reported they took a couple of bird strikes into the right hand engine (PW4090), they needed to dump fuel. While dumping fuel the aircraft climbed to 7000 feet, then positioned for a safe landing on runway 19C about 30 minutes after departure. The aircraft vacated the runway and stopped on the adjacent taxiway where the right hand engine was shut down for inspection by emergency services, the aircraft was subsequently towed to the apron.

The flight was cancelled.

A passenger reported the replacement aircraft developed a fault before departure and was unable to perform the flight.
