A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-400, flight MH-864 from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Medan (Indonesia), was destined for Medan's Polonia Airport estimated to land at 15:20L (scheduled landing at 15:00L) but approached Kuala Namu International Airport's runway. Just before touch down at approximately 15:30L the crew recognized the error, went around and positioned for an approach to the correct Polonia Airport landing there 15 minutes later with a delay of 45 minutes (including the 20 minutes delay at departure from Kuala Lumpur).

A new airport Kuala Namu International Airport, which will start operations in August 2013 and longer term is to replace Polonia Airport, has already been built but is not yet operational. The airport is located 13nm northeast of Polonia Airport with a similiar airport layout and identical runway directions, however features a longer runway (3750 meters length instead of 3000 meters).
