A Thomson Boeing 767-300, registration G-PJLO performing flight BY-569 from Cancun (Mexico) to Birmingham,EN (UK), was descending towards Birmingham (runway length 2600 meters/8530 feet) when the crew stopped the approach at 3000 feet reporting problems with the flaps and decided to divert to East Midlands,EN (UK) due to the longer runway available. The aircraft climbed to 5000 feet for the diversion and landed safely on East Midland's runway 27 (length 2890 meters/9500 feet) at a about 30 knots higher speed than normal.

A passenger tweeted that the flaps problems were known shortly after takeoff from Cancun, the crew hoped the problem would go away by itself but the problem resurfaced on approach. The crew announced they would need the longer runway and therefore they would divert to East Midlands.
