A Nusantara Air Charter British Aerospace BAe 146-200, registration PK-JKC performing a daily freight flight from Jayapura to Wamena (Indonesia) carrying fuel supplies for Wamena, had safely landed at Wamena, had reached its parking position, was shut down and being unloaded at around 11:50L (02:50Z), when one of the fuel drums caught fire and set the airplane ablaze. No injuries occurred, however, the aircraft burned down beyond repair.

Wamena's police chief said, that a fuel drum fell from the aircraft spilling its contents onto the hot brakes of the aircraft and ignited resulting in a blaze that set the aircraft on fire, too.

An observer on the ground reported the fire broke out just before 11:48L (02:48Z) when a fuel drum dropped and ignited with the source of ignition unknown, two airport fire engines responded together, both with similiar tank capacity so that both engines needed to refill their supplies at about the same time, which needed quite some long time so that the fire flared up during those refills. By 12:14L the tail plane had already separated and was on the ground but the wings were still intact, at 12:26L a major explosion occurred probably because of the right hand wing separating releasing the content of its wing fuel tank, fire fighters managed to put the fire out at 12:50L.
