An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N371AN performing flight AA-70 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 199 people on board, was climbing out of Dallas' runway 36R when the crew reported they had taken a lightning strike near the first officer's windshield and requested to level off at 12,000 feet. Three minutes later the crew reported they had now taken another lightning strike at the left hand side of the nose and requested to return to Dallas Ft. Worth requesting runway 36L. The crew declared emergency due to overweight landing and requested emergency services on stand by to have the brakes checked after landing. Other arrivals were switched from the west side (runways 36L/R) to the east side of the aerodrome (runways 35L/C/R) with ATC reporting the west side was shut down due to the emergency. On approach to the aerodrome the aircraft encountered turbulence causing a temporary flaps overspeed. The aircraft landed safely on runway 36L about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration N393AN reached Frankfurt with a delay of 4 hours.

The incident aircraft has not yet resumed service 23 hours after landing back.
