A United Boeing 757-200, registration N29124 performing flight Porto (Portugal) to Newark,NJ (USA), was enroute at FL350 about 440nm westnorthwest of Lajes, Azores Islands (Portugal) when the crew decided to turn around and divert to Lajes due to a burning odour and a fire warning on board. The aircraft landed safely on Lajes' runway 15 about one hour later.

Passengers reported there had been a burning odour in the cabin, a fire warning could be heard in the back of the aircraft.
