An Aeromexico Boeing 737-700, registration XA-VAM performing flight AM-468 from Mexico City (Mexico) to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 90 passengers on board, was enroute near Mazatlan (Mexico) when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (CFM56) down and diverted to Mazatlan for a safe landing.

A replacement Boeing 737-700 registration N904AM reached Los Angeles with a delay of 7 hours.

Passengers reported the engine emitted two loud bangs and streaks of flame from the engine (consistent with engine compressor stalls or engine surges) describing the events as engine explosions.

The airline confirmed a technical malfunction of the engine.
