A UPS United Parcel Service Boeing 767-300, registration N393UP performing flight 5X-259 from Venice (Italy) to Cologne (Germany), was on approach to Cologne when the crew reported problems with the slats. The aircraft performed some delay vectors, then joined the final approach to runway 31R and continued for a safe landing at a higher than normal speed.

A post flight inspection revealed, that two pieces of alloy cover, each about 0.3kg in weight, had separated from the aircraft, presumably within 10 miles south of the airport.
